5/24/2013 - Census: Asheville continues growth
by Clarke Morrison - Asheville Citizen Times

ASHEVILLE -- New Census Bureau figures show the city is continuing its population growth at a rate of nearly 3 percent over the past two years while the region's more rural areas have seen a decline.

The figures cleared for release today estimate Asheville's population in 2012 at 85,712, an increase of 2.8 percent from 2010.

Buncombe County's projected rise is 2.6 percent to 244,490, while for Henderson County the estimated increase is 1.4 percent to 108,266.

The numbers don't surprise Mike Miller, owner of Town and Mountain Realty, who said homesales in the city are strong.

"When I get calls from people moving here, those folks are more interested in living either in the city in walkable neighborhoods or very close to the city of Asheville where it's a fairly short, convenient drive."
