9/19/2012 - Asheville, North Carolina, seeks bids for 4,000 LED streetlights

The city of Asheville, North Carolina has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the purchase of LED streetlights. In its ongoing commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reduction of energy consumption, the city is implementing the final stage of a full-scale conversion to LED streetlighting technology. The last phase of the installation will include approximately 4,000 LED streetlight fixtures and photocells.

"Our conversion to LED streetlights has been well received by the residents of Asheville. We have had a tremendous response to the energy savings generated by the switch," said Maggie Ullman, sustainability coordinator for the city of Asheville. The city is currently saving about $150,000 annually from the 3,500 LED fixtures already installed. The first phase installation included 900 LED streetlights manufactured by BetaLED/Cree. The second, which totaled about 2,600 LED streetlights also utilized fixtures from BetaLED/Cree. The proposed project is seeking bids for approximately 4,000 LED streetlights.

"Because of Progress Energy guidelines, this bid is only open to pre-approved vendors for pre-approved fixtures," said Ullman. The listed LED fixtures include BetaLED/Cree, Leotek Electronics, and GE Lighting. Pre-approved manufacturers for the photocell components are Sun Rise Technology, Acuity Lighting, and Ripley Company.

Complete bids must be submitted to the city of Asheville by Thursday, September 20, 2012. Requests for clarifications and further information can be submitted to the purchasing manager at The complete bid document can be found here.
