Maxwell concert to benefit Helpmate
ASHEVILLE - Christina Maxwell, recently named N.C.'s Distinguished Young Woman of 2012, will perform a benefit concert for Helpmate at 7 p.m. today at Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church St.
Admission is $10. This will be the Reynolds High student's senior voice recital, featuring sacred and Broadway songs and other musical selections. Guest performers will include Alicia Russell, Haley McGuinn, Buck Hinman and Joanna Beck, with accompanist David Witt on piano.

Make a Wish benefit at Crowne Plaza
ASHEVILLE - The Wish Ball, An Evening of Dreams, will be 7 p.m.-midnight Saturday at the Expo Center at Crowne Plaza Resort.
The evening benefits Make-A-Wish Central and Western North Carolina.
Admission is $75.
The cocktail attire event will feature hors d'oeuvres, beer and wine, silent and live auctions, entertainment and dancing to the music of Kat Williams.

Majabe roast supports acupuncture
ASHEVILLE - A roast of acupuncture pioneer Cissy Majebe, 6:30-10 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Brewing Company, 12 Old Charlotte Highway, will benefit the Traditions Acupuncture Foundation. David Hurand and Darcel Grimes will officiate the roast.
Suggested donation is $20 and includes Latin dancing with Picante & Reuben Orengo, rock 'n' roll with Jimmy Baker & the Profits, appetizers, beer, wine, nonalcoholic beverages and a silent auction.

Car washes boost Eblen Charities
ASHEVILLE - All three Gorilla Car Wash locations will be giving away free car washes 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday and collecting donations for Eblen Charities' utility and heating assistance program.
