ASHEVILLE -- The Folk Heritage Committee has announced the summer 2012 dates for the 46th annual Shindig on the Green and the 85th annual Mountain Dance and Folk Festival.
Both events feature old-timers as well as the newest generation of traditional and mountain string bands, ballad singers and big circle mountain dancers and cloggers.
Shindig, a free event held on Roger McGuire Green in Pack Square Park, with a stage show and informal jam sessions, takes place on Saturday evenings. Kicking off on June 30 this year, Shindig will also kick up some heels on July 7, 14 and 21, Aug. 11, 18 and 25 and Sept. 1.
The Mountain Dance and Folk and Festival, a ticketed event at Diana Wortham Theatre in Pack Place, will run at 7 nightly Aug. 2-4. Founded by Bascom Lamar Lunsford in 1928, it's billed as the nation's longest running folk festival, showcasing the best of the region's mountain musicians and dancers during its three evenings of indoor performances.
