ASHEVILLE -- With the help of acts like Tangerine Dream, Flaming Lips and Passion Pit, Moogfest returns this October with a blend of classic electronic musicians and up-and-coming innovators of various genres.
Organizer A.C. Entertainment on Wednesday released the first round of the lineup for the festival set for Oct. 28-30 in various city venues.
About 24,000 people attended the inaugural Moogfest in 2010, which celebrates the vanguard spirit of Asheville's Bob Moog, the inventor of the Moog synthesizer, which changed both popular and experimental music. This theme is why the lineup already includes acts you'd find in totally different sections of a record store, like soul singer Mayer Hawthorne and retro-pop duo Chromeo.
"There are a lot of conversations out there," promoter Ashley Capps said about the final lineup announcement, which might not be made until August. "We are still working on the details. ... Even since the announcement, we've seen new opportunities. (The festival) is in constant motion until it's done."
Passes, ranging from $149.50 to the VIP Festival Pass for $379.50, will go on sale at noon Saturday at http://www.moogfest.com/.
Organizers expect the event will feature performances by more than 60 artists in numerous venues throughout downtown, including the Asheville Civic Center Arena, Thomas Wolfe Auditorium and The Orange Peel Social & Pleasure Club. Capps indicated there have been discussions about adding new venues this year as well.
"The core event will be very similar to last year," he said. "We are investigating a number of interesting ideas. We will see how it all plays out."
The festival will also host workshops, talks, interactive experiences and art exhibitions and installations.
But the focus is still the music: In addition to Tangerine Dream, 1970s groundbreakers Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Suicide will appear in rare U.S. performances.
