7/7/2008 - Asheville's Mission Hospitals Gets Grant
Asheville – Mission Hospitals has received a $342,059 grant from The Duke Endowment to support a program to test patients for abnormal blood sugar levels.
High blood sugar levels could be an indication that a person has diabetes.
The grant will pay the salary of four diabetes educators over two years, enabling the hospital to test blood glucose levels for all patients 18 and older.
Patients with high glucose levels will receive education and medical treatment.
Early identification and intervention is important to helping people control diabetes before complications arise, the hospital said.
Mission hopes the project will reduce hospital complications, cost, length of stay and readmission for people found to have high blood glucose levels.
The program is part of the hospital's participation in the national Surgical Care Improvement Project that is designed to minimize surgical complications.
