Outside magazine has named Asheville as one of the Top 10 "Best River Towns in America." The magazine launched its annual online contest this week to determine the best Outside town in America through a three-week Facebook competition.

For its 35th anniversary issue in October, Outside teamed up with the environmental nonprofit American Rivers to identify the top 10 river towns in the U.S. The winning town will be featured on the October magazine cover, Outside Online and an exclusive segment on Outside Television.

Asheville is among the following towns chosen for their high quality of living and an active recreational engagement with nearby waterways for kayaking, fishing, boating, walking and bike paths, and riverfront parks: Hood River, Ore.; Nevada City, Calif.; Milwaukee; Nashville, Tenn.; Boise, Idaho; Missoula, Mont.; Durango, Colo.; Ithaca, N.Y.; and Richmond, Va.

As part of the contest, the public can vote, submit photos, video and comments backing up their selection, and will have a chance to win a five-day adventure to one of the top 10 towns.

Vote in the contest at www.facebook.com/outsidemagazine through July 10.
