ASHEVILLE -- Tickets are on sale this afternoon for one of the city's hottest festivals: the annual Brewgrass craft beer celebration, Sept. 15 at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. And with a new ticket system this year, sales should go a lot smoother, festival producer Jimi Rentz said.
Online sales begin at 5 p.m. today at www.brewgrassfestival.com and also through the Brewgrass Facebook page. Sales will be handled through the etix network. The price is $45 plus an etix service charge. Sales are limited to four tickets per transaction. "I'm thinking they will be gone in three or four hours," Rentz said.
Brewgrass will sell 3,000 tickets online, with another 500 being held back for in-person sales at Barley's Taproom in a few weeks, Rentz said. Martin Luther King Jr. Park can accommodate about 4,000 people. The balance of the admissions will go to breweries, vendors and guests.
Brewgrass has become so popular that there are never enough tickets to satisfy demand. Last year, the festival received 80,000 ticket requests, crashing a computer server and leaving many festival fans empty handed and disappointed. "Etix should be able to handle it," Rentz said.
Brewgrass proceeds go to Big Brothers and Big Sisters of WNC, which last year received $14,000 from the festival, Rentz said.
Also today, voting begins in the Beer City USA online poll. Asheville has three consecutive victores in the voting (one tie with Portland, Ore., and two solo victories). Votes can be cast at www.examiner.com/beer.
