Trout Fishing

Most trout streams, including high-elevation streams, are full and gushing. Fishing in most waters will be difficult until water levels fall.

Recommended dry flies are No. 20-24 parachute Adams, No. 20-14 Black Caddis, No. 18-14 black parachute Madame X , No. 18-14 black Stimulator, No. 22-16 Blue-Winged Olive No. 26-22 black or gray Midge and No. 16-22 crème Midge. Recommended nymphs are No. 18-14 black Stone, No. 18-14 olive Hare's Ear, No. 20-16 Pheasant Tail, No. 18-16 Prince, No. 12 pink San Juan Worm, No. 16-14 Copper John, No. 18-16 Peacock Caddis and No. 18-16 Winter Sedge Caddis. Big streamers are recommended for high-water streams: No. 4 Sparkle Minnow, No. 6 River Screamer and No. 12-6 Woolly Booger in any color.

These flies are recommended for all types of water (inside the park and outside). For large streams such as the Tuckasegee and French Broad rivers, add extra weight to get nymphs and streamers down into deep water.

Lake Fishing

Smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and spotted bass activity is very good.

Chatuge: Spotted bass, largemouth bass and some hybrid bass are hitting jointed Rebel Lures and top-water lures in shallow water close to shorelines off points. Anglers also are catching bass trolling the main lake channels. Some bream are still hitting redworms. For more information, call 389-6465.

Fontana: Bass fishing is very good. Smallmouth bass, spotted bass and largemouth bass are hitting spinnerbaits, crankbaits and live minnows in shallow water off points and rocky banks. . Walleye are hitting ice-jigs tipped with nightcrawlers at depths of 60 feet off points. For more information, call 498-2129 or 488-6423.

Julian: Tilapia are hitting doughballs and corn. Catfish are hitting nightcrawlers and chicken livers. Largemouth bass are hitting top-water lures and plastic worms. For more information, call David Blynt at 684-0376.

Santeetlah: No report. Marina is closed for the season. For more information, call 479-8180.
