10/6/2011 - Asheville School seniors selected as National Merit semifinalists
by Mountain XPress

OUR SCHOOLS here in the Mountains of Western North Carolina, both private and public, continue to thrive and prepare our children for their - and our - future!

From the Asheville School:

Based on preliminary scores from national testing (PSAT), two Asheville School students were selected as semifinalists in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Seniors Patrick (P.J.) Eckerd and Lawrence Waller, both from Asheville, NC, have the opportunity to apply and advance to the finalist level to compete for National Merit Scholarships.

"The bar was set at an extremely high level by the College Board; the students who earned this recognition have indeed set themselves apart," said Director of the College Office Van Kussrow. "Asheville School is very proud to have the exceptional scholarship of these hard working and talented students recognized on the national level."

There are approximately 16,000 students selected as semifinalists, representing less than one percent of high school seniors nationwide. Around 1.5 million juniors from 22,000 high schools entered the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalists have the opportunity to compete for 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million.

Commended students in the 2012 National Scholarship Program are: Laura Gibbs (Asheville, NC), Ben Groh (Fairview, NC) and Taylor Smith (Asheville, NC). These students placed in the top five percent of those who entered the competition.

A nationally acclaimed co-ed college preparatory boarding and day school, Asheville School enrolls approximately 275 students from across the country and overseas. Recent graduates are attending Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Caltech, UCLA, UNC-Chapel Hill, Davidson, NC State, University of Virginia, Emory, Duke, and Wake Forest, among others.
